grafted replaced a poor-quality lean-to with a striking red-brick extension that is modest in size, but impactful in its choice of material, application of craft and the influence it has on the occupants’ day-to-day living.
Responding to its context within a Conservation Area in Norwich’s Golden Triangle, the extension features an undulating wraparound pattern of precast concrete panels in a nod to the Victorian dogtooth corbelling on the existing detached house.
The red-pigmented concrete panels were hand-crafted by the practice who also fabricated the richly-stained oak kitchen, birch plywood ceiling and internal joinery throughout the project.
Cast Corbel House, grafted’s debut project, received a 2023 RIBA Design & Craftsmanship Award and a 2025 RIBA East Award.

For clients with grown-up children, creating additional space wasn’t their top priority. Instead, improving their home’s layout and thermal performance was key to bringing under-loved rooms back into daily use.
The light-filled kitchen and dining area improves the connection with the garden and provides ample opportunity to host the clients’ large family and much-loved grandchildren.
The full ground-floor renovation and wraparound extension resulted in a home enjoyed by multiple generations.
