Wimbledon

Wimbledon, London

A family approached us to renovate and reconfigure this locally listed house near Wimbledon Park due to our sensitive handling of heritage buildings in conservation areas.

The house had fallen into disrepair before it was taken on by our clients who were keen to modernise it whilst honouring the building’s history. grafted’s designs for a contemporary extension pairs Flemish bond brickwork with buff-coloured lintels and copings, complementing the detailing of the existing house.

Central to our brief was resolving a number of awkward and fragmented rear extensions that, despite contributing to a large footprint, made the house unsuitable for large family dinners or hosting gatherings.

Our designs also address issues with poor lighting and head height by bringing the roofline of the new extension higher, enabling the three extensions to provide separate functions but flow as one.

Internally, designs include a generous open plan kitchen with oak cabinetry and high-contrast marble.

The exposed timber ceiling and oak-lined walls ground the kitchen in natural materials, enhancing its connection with the garden.

Generous openings in the rooflights and glazed doors bathe the kitchen in dappled sunlight, creating a warm and tactile environment for cooking, entertaining and relaxation.

A window seat in the kitchen provides a tranquil corner to enjoy the view of the garden.

Throughout, a soft, layered material pallette of lime plaster, rich oak, brushed brass and muted, earthy red gives the kitchen depth and texture.

The scheme was well received at pre-application stage and received planning permission from the London Borough of Merton Council in May 2026.

We look forward to this project starting on site in Wimbledon in the summer.
